Paul the Pest

April 28, 2024 Preacher: Michael McKinney Series: Witness

Topic: Expositions Scripture: Acts 24:1–27

The sermon titled "Paul the Pest," given by Pastor Mike, explores the story of Paul's trial before Governor Felix in Acts 24. The major theme of the sermon was the concept that true followers of Jesus may need to disrupt societal normalcy and standards for the sake of the gospel. In this process, they may be branded "pests." Digging deep into Paul's story, Pastor Mike suggests that these actions don't necessarily intend to unsettle the peace, but rather are a call for Christians to challenge and testify to their faith, as Paul did, which may lead to tension and conflict. An essential part of this sermon is regarding Paul's trials. Despite accusations of being a nuisance and instigating unrest among the Jews, Paul firmly defended his innocence and faith in Jesus. Pastor Mike argues that these accusations were merely born out of their opposition to Christianity and the revolutionary ideas it brought. The sermon underscores the importance of standing firm on the rock-solid faith found only in Jesus and His righteousness He imparts to us, even amid false allegations, as Paul did. Eventually, Governor Felix, who wasn’t unfamiliar with Christianity, found himself fear-stricken as he listened to Paul speak about faith in Jesus, righteousness, self-control, and the forthcoming judgment. However, Felix’s greed for money overpowered any fear or repentance he may have felt. After two years of listening to Paul, he refused to turn to Jesus. This is a vital reminder for us to self-evaluate our vulnerability towards, and the possible enslavement of, materialistic vices. In conclusion, Pastor Mike encouraged those who have placed their hope in Jesus to be prepared for societal challenges when standing by their beliefs. We do not need to fear being labeled a "pest" if it means testifying to our faith in Jesus. The sermon concludes with a call to true repentance and a stark reminder to accept the priceless riches of Jesus, over transient worldly possessions.
