A Cosmic Spectacle

March 24, 2024 Preacher: Peter Ochoa Series: Witness

Topic: Expositions Scripture: Acts 21:27–36

In the sermon titled "A Cosmic Spectacle," Pastor Peter Ochoa critically analyzes Acts 21:27-36, underscoring how the Jews became angered when seeing Paul in the temple. Drawing parallels from John 1:14 and other portions of Acts, he highlights the profound impact and implications of "seeing" in this context. He presents Paul's life as a spectacle - an object of intense focus and scorn. Paul is considered a threat to the Jewish faith, a sentiment stemming from anger and fear. The sermon then identifies three main lessons for us today: (#1) - the importance of biblical teachings, (#2) - empathy toward marginalized people, and (#3) - willingness to withstand criticism and mockery in Christ's name. Pastor Peter asserts the significance of accurately understanding and meditating on the teachings of Christ, a tool which not only challenges prevailing beliefs but also acts as a spiritual weapon against sin. Citing Jesus' mission and William Booth's example, he emphasizes the critical role of Christians to reach out and provide refuge to the oppressed, marginalized, and discriminated. Lastly, Pastor Peter illuminates the essence of endurance despite hardships and criticisms, stating that being a true disciple entails bearing the burden of reproach (disgrace / shame) and being emboldened in faith even amidst adversity. Pastor Peter concludes his sermon with a heartfelt call for self-reflection and repentance and encourages us to wholly surrender to Christ. He urges us to live courageously for Jesus even when the path may be challenging.
